Living in Richmond

Richmond, small but perfectly formed!

This thriving Yorkshire Dales Market town and the surrounding area offers a mix of housing for sale and to rent from Georgian homes to recently built modern houses and flats.

The town has good nursery provision, three primary schools and nearby villages also cater for younger children’s educational and developmental needs. There are two secondary schools in the town and two others in nearby Leyburn and Catterick Garrison.

The town centre has a good range of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, most of them independents, a couple of supermarkets and filling stations.

The restored Victorian railway station is a social meeting and leisure hub with a restaurant, three-screen cinema, gallery and artisan shops.

Richmondshire Leisure Trust offers main and learner swimming pools plus health club and wet suite with a further three pools at Catterick Leisure Centre.

Richmond is a very sociable place with many clubs and societies welcoming new members.

The Georgian Theatre offers a year-round programme of drama and shows and award-winning pantomime. Less than half-an-hour away, Darlington Hippodrome is host to plays, opera, comedy, music and dance.

Swaledale Festival, Richmond Walking and Book Festival and Richmond MayFest music weekend are growing, popular fixtures in the area’s cultural calendar.

The River Swale winding through the town, woodland and the glorious freedom and breathtaking views of the old Georgian racecourse give plenty of places to walk without leaving town.

Beautiful Swaledale and Wensleydale are just a very short drive to find other market towns, rivers, walks, castles and abbeys.

What people say about living in Richmond…

Will Gardner

“I have lived in Richmond all my life, working within the area. When I had the opportunity to take over a well-known, established florist in this lovely town it was a great pleasure to become part of the business community.

Richmond is a great place to live and work and the people are so friendly. The icing on the cake are the views from Richmond and the surrounding area, which are stunning.”

Richmond, especially on a summer's evening, certainly has a slightly "continental" feel: Prince Charles compared the town centre to Siena!
