Tuesday 11th September saw the Yorkshire In Bloom presentations take place at York Racecourse with Original Richmond plus five local businesses taking away ten awards between them. Original Richmond was awarded silver gilt and also won the 2018 Yorkshire Rose Discretionary Award for Best New Entry and were paid some great compliments by the judges. In their citation they said, “Formed just ten months before judging, with the aim of using ‘In Bloom’ as a catalyst to bring the community together, Richmond have demonstrated how a town of this size can pull together to improve and enhance its environment for the benefit for all.”
Just the Job Environmental Enterprises are delighted to have been awarded a GOLD in the Charitable Establishments category at this year’s Awards. They also won a Discretionary Yorkshire Rose Award for the Best Supported Learning Project.
Manager, Steve Biggs, is thrilled, “Everyone at Just the Job is very proud of their achievements and it’s great to be recognised for all the hard work our Team Members, volunteers, staff and supporters have contributed to our brilliant project. Visitors are always welcome when the gates are open, and if you stay long enough you may get a spade put in your hand. The Community Orchard is also open all year round with fruit to pick in the autumn.”
The Just the Job Horticultural Project and Community Orchard are located at the top of Quarry Rd in Richmond.
King Street Kitchen and Gift got silver gilt with owner, Alyson Swift saying, “I am really pleased with my award. Like the other businesses, this is the first time we have entered and I take it as a great compliment for the shop.”
York House were awarded gold. Owner Christine Swift is delighted with the result saying modestly, “I never thought we would be good enough to receive a gold”. This award is a testament to all the hard work that Christine and her staff put in to creating a unique business in the town.
Yorkshire Country Holidays received silver gilt for the holiday cottage’s Mr. Yorke’s Walled Garden) missing the coveted gold by only 2 points. Owners, Dennis and Marcia Mcluckie are still pleased, “The garden was a jungle when we bought it 10 years ago. We started work in earnest about 8 years ago, so receiving this award gives us great encouragement to carry on!”.
Millgate House achieved gold, overall business winner in the category and Yorkshire Rose Best Business Award 2018 a triple credit to add to Tim Culkin and Austin Lynch’s string of awards for their delightful town centre garden.
Marcia McLuckie, Chair of The Original Richmond, Richmond Business and Tourism Association is extremely pleased with the ten awards that came home to Richmond, and she said, “ The Original Richmond Business and Tourism Association entered Yorkshire In Bloom to raise the profile of the town and its businesses as a beautiful place to live and visit. Working closely with Richmondshire District Council and Richmond Town Council our committee has created a lot of interest amongst the community on how Richmond is presented and cared for. Members of the public and the businesses really got behind our entry working hard for this great result.”
The Original Richmond In Bloom committee will meet again next week to start on plans for the town’s 2019 entry when they will be entering the Small Town category. If anyone has ideas for next year’s route and areas requiring a little tender loving care in Richmond, members of the committee will be on the curtilage in Richmond’s Market Place this Saturday 15 September from 11.30am – early afternoon.
