An oak tree has been planted at the entrance to Rufus Woods to commemorate our late Queen, Elizabeth II.
Members of the Original Richmond Business and Tourism Association (ORBTA) purchased the tree in memory of her Majesty. The newly elected Chair of ORBTA, Paul Harrison, and the retiring Chair, Marcia McLuckie, planted the tree at the entrance to Rufus Wood with the help of Steve Biggs of Just the Job, who are custodians of the newly created Richmond woodland.
The creation of Rufus Woods, high above Richmond by the old Georgian racecourse, was one of a series of the Celebrate Richmond 950 events held in 2021 to commemorate the commissioning of Richmond Castle and the beginnings of the town.
Marcia has been Chair of the Association since 2017 and during that time has seen ORBTA go from strength to strength. “ORBTA is an active association, which is important for businesses and the town. Membership is strong, which gives us a bigger voice over decisions that affect our businesses and we are proactive in creating opportunities to help retain Richmond’s vibrancy. I have enjoyed the last 6-years, but it is time for a change and I am confident that Paul will continue as a good leader for our group.”
The Association has over one-hundred members who have been responsible for Richmond’s success in Yorkshire in Bloom; shortlisting the town in the Great British High Street Awards; Celebrate Richmond 950; Loyalty Card promotions; Easter window competitions and other activities in the town.
Paul looks forward to his role as Chair of the Association and commented: ‘I am delighted to take over at this time. Marcia’s leadership has led to a thriving and expanding organisation, but we face further challenges, not least in the face of the financial headwinds, but Richmond is a wonderful place and we need to continue to exploit the strengths we have to offer.’
