10th June is the anniversary of the action for which John Lyons won his Victoria Cross. His citation states: “On 10 June 1855 at Sebastopol, in the Crimean Peninsula, Private Lyons picked up a live shell which had fallen among the guard of the trenches, and threw it over the parapet, thus saving many lives”.
To mark the occasion, we are hosting an all-day event focusing on the Crimean War: the role of the 19th Regiment (forerunner of the Green Howards); the unique account of Margaret Kirwan who accompanied the regiment and who found herself so near the action that her skirt was nicked by stray bullets, and in particular the experience of John Lyons.
The day will include a private tour of the collection, a glimpse into the museum stores, a handling session of contemporary material from the conflict and, to end the day, the chance for guests to hold and examine the Lyons Victoria Cross medal group.
This very special event includes:
• Welcome and refreshments on arrival
• Private guided tour of The Green Howards Museum
• Handling of museum artefacts
• Buffet lunch
• Crimean history talk
• Close up session with Victoria Cross awarded to John Lyons
There are limited tickets for this event due to the personalised nature of the event. Therefore, we are offering an early booking price for those who book before 30th April of £100 per person. Tickets after that date will be £125 per person, so book early to avoid disappointment.
