Towering above the River Swale in the heart of Richmond, the castle has been a spectacular and imposing sight since its foundation in the 1070s. A bold statement of great wealth and power and an incredible survival of an early 11th century stone castle. Originally built to subdue the unruly North of England, it is one of the greatest Norman fortresses in Britain.

The art and craft of book making dates back over two thousand years, but whether that’s works from ancient China, Japanese designs, the rich tradition of Islamic bookbinding, or the leather-bound volumes of stately-home libraries, the principles are similar: papers are sewn together and secured within a protective, often decorated, casing.

A tour of the Old Gang Smelting Mills and mine ruins. Starting from Surrender Bridge, this walk will be almost entirely on shooting tracks. We’ll follow the tracks through the Old Gang Mines and across Friarfold Hush up to the Blakethwaite Mines. There is a short section across the heather if you want a close look at the dams. We’ll break by the shooting hut for lunch.
